It is all about putting Fox in the spotlight, never about a good story. I think Fichtner is a fairly solid villain actor, even if he occasionally feels like a poor man's Christopher Walken, but he is still one of the better things about the film, even if he has very little to work with here. The plot about her dead father and with Fichtner's character responsible for the death feels so predictable and desperate to evoke emotions that it's almost cringeworthy. But apart from the fact that Fox is not a very talented actress, the story about her character also isn't effective at all. The reason for that may have been that they got Megan Fox to play the character and she is still quite a huge star, so probably demanded lots of screen time and a plot that revolves around her in order to say yes to this franchise. And is this really a Turtles film? I must say I felt that it was really more "April O'Neil: The Movie". The fact that I did not like the looks of the Turtles that much is purely subjective I guess, but the story just felt so generic, predictable and there is absolutely nothing individual to it I must say. But in terms of quality, it is really far from enough unfortunately. And this first film must have been successful enough as a sequel was greenlighted not much later. That's why many, especially the fans I guess, must have been curious when they heard that the franchise is going to be rebooted in live action with a 2014 release. Hands down, even many decades after their creation, everybody still knows and somewhat appreciates the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".

In the end, this movie is overloaded with action which gets to be a bit mind numbing. The movie needs to sit them down and let them have some fun. Those are great to inject humor and build chemistry. They should have a couple of scenes where they stop, eat pizza and joke around. The turtles are fine although they need some scenes to introduce their relationships and individuality. The comedy is a small step above the bad jokes in Transformers. She has improved slightly over the years but I wouldn't proclaim her to be actually good. Her cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) tries to help.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES is given a face lift for a new generation of fans and thankfully it's entertaining without changing too much of what made the originals so entertaining.Īn evil criminal group called the Foot Clan led by Shredder is stealing a load of chemicals from the docks. The ending packs a nice little punch but I must say that this Terminator-style Shredder just didn't work. The CGI isn't too bad for the most part, although there's an action sequence down the side of the mountain, which just doesn't take off as well as it should have. With that said, the real stand out is William Fichtner who plays the type of character you'd expect him to. The vocal work for all the main characters are extremely good. He's also given the most one-liners, which don't always work but the jokes are in good nature. I would say that all four were fairly well-written, although there's no question that Michelangelo takes most of the spotlight. This new version of the turtles aren't going to offend fans of the original as the filmmakers here at least tried to do their own thing but at the same time keep the same DNA of the 80's turtles. Thankfully the turtles, Splinter and Shredder eventually take over the screen and Fox's character is pushed to the background. In fact, she's pretty much wooden throughout the picture and is clearly the least interesting thing. I'm going to admit that the first ten or fifteen-minutes are pretty bad because it's pretty much character development for O'Neil and sadly Fox just doesn't have the talent to pull any of it off. bad guys" story that manages to keep us glued to the screen. There's really not too much "plot" going on in this movie but that doesn't hurt thing too badly since we're given an entertaining "good guys vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) *** (out of 4) Reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) is trying to break a major story when she runs into four walking, talking turtles who just happen to be trained as ninjas and fight crime.
